by design

This is a small portfolio of recent and current projects undertaken by Jim Gillespie. In his previous business, Datascape Information, he created the Directory of Australia Museums which was part of the portal website AMOL (Australian Museums Online). He also wrote the software and user manuals for MAIS (Multicultural Australia and Immigration Studies), HEAPS (Health Education and Promotion System) and OMBIS (Ombudsmans Information System). Eva Pidgeon has been maintaining the websites for Australian Ethical Investment for over ten years. She recently took over the volunteer production of Pedal Power ACT's eBulletin which is emailed to over 2000 subscribers every fortnight.

Visit the Alan Anforth website Alan Anforth, Barrister
The client requested a simple, no frills website without graphics or images. The website was required to provide the client's contact details, show his professional interest areas and promote a book he had co-authored. The design was completed using a careful selection of fonts and colours and is working successfully.

Visit the Beacon Legal website Beacon Legal
This project is currently under development with the brief to create a website which will show Beacon Legal clients the progess of their conveyance. Stage one shows the initial website which features an online Instruction Form where details of the property purchase or sale can be entered.

Visit the AVA - Lawfinders website Accident Victims Association — Lawfinders
The clients were keen to have a strong impact website that would deliver their message regarding seeking legal help if you were an accident victim. Much of the information presented on the website is available to download in PDF format for off-line reading. The online Accident Report Form on this website has all the necessary error checking and security measures required when presenting such a form on a website. Enquiries via this form generate emails to AVA – Lawfinders and a confirming email to the enquirer. The client has reported good use of this option.

Visit the Noosa wesbite Peter Harris — Noosa holiday accommodation
The visual approach to designing this website was to capture the colours and holiday atmosphere of Noosa. This is reflected in the blues of the sea and sky and the colours of the sand. Images are 'framed' with a white border to create the look of holiday snap-shots. A feature of this website is the booking calendar and online booking form. Sitting behind the website are administration routines which allow the owner to update the calendar, seasonal periods, rates and contact details.

Visit the Lake Burley Griffin Boat Hire website Lake Burley Griffin Boat Hire
This design called for a colourful and informative website showing children and adults enjoying themselves while boating on Lake Burley Griffin. The target audience was identified as being tourists looking for activities while visiting Canberra, local residents aware of the boat hire facility but wishing to know operation times and hire charges, social groups seeking fun activities, tour operators and activity planners finding out what is available in Canberra, and corporate organisations looking for sponsorship and promotional opportunities. A Flash animation was used on the Home page to present various images of the Boat Hire facility and the paddleboats.

Visit the Joshua's Fault website Joshua's Fault winery
Stage one of this project presents details of this Canberra Region winery including its location, contact details, information about the vineyard and the winemaker, news and descriptions of the wines. Stage two will complete the ability to order and purchase wines online. After choosing the wine and supplying contact and delivery details a link to a secure server, hosted by the winery's bank, will allow customers to submit their credit card details. An optional downloadable form will be available for those who prefer to order through the post.

Visit Batemans Bay Sailing Charters website Batemans Bay Sailing Charters
The website is part of a marketing plan to interest people in taking a cruise on board the catamaran Wandera. A range of images are included in the design showing the boat under construction, being launched and at sea. Photos of people on board and internal shots of the facilities help convey the scale of the vessel. Details of cruises, costs and testimonials are included and one page describes whale activity which can be spotted off the coast from Batemans Bay.

Visit Gates Cottage Bed & Breakfast website Gates Cottage Bed & Breakfast
The client had already produced an information brochure for the B&B and the colours, style and photographs used for this were incorporated into the website design. Further photographs were used to show prospective clients the range of facilities available at the B&B. The information used in the website was put into a PDF file and made available as a download. This is then available to print off-line.

Visit the Key Group website The Key Group of Companies
This is a 'parent' website for a group of five interrelated companies. The client provided a Key Group logo plus logos for each of the companies. The main logo was light in structure with multiple colours so the design style reflects this look with open text and images that pick up the colours as well as representing the activity of each company. Each company has its own domain name and the URLs of the companies open that company's page on the website.

Visit the Petree Independent Living website Petree Independent Living
This website promotes a house being built in Adelaide which will contain seven independent living suites designed for residents aged over 55. Features of the website include rotating images on the Home page of people from the target audience at their leisure; PDF files to download showing plans of the dwelling; photos of the dwelling taken during the construction period; and a Google map showing the location of the dwelling.

Visit the ACT Car Rentals website ACT Car Rentals
This local business required a website to promote its service in the competitive car rental world. A web page with information about the available cars and rental rates is the forerunner to a possible online booking system. Other pages detail the vehicle rental agreement terms and conditions and the requirements to rent a vehicle. A FAQ page further explains driver responsibility, limitations, reservation processes and vehicle return by way of questions and answers. The Location page includes a Google map which clearly shows customers the location of the business.

Visit the Telopea67 online reunion website Telopea67: community project
The Telopea67 website came from a need to have a platform on which to develop a visitor guestbook application. The guestbook records visitor details and their comments in a text file. Routines to ban specified visitors by their IP address and to catch potential spam attacks are included. An online trivia quiz where data is stored in an XML file and a contacts list with data stored in a SQL database have also been created. A visitor log file is maintained and this is checked to note any possible spam harvester attacks. From the log, website statistics are available for viewing by the website visitor. The website acted as an online meeting place and an 'appetiser' for a planned 40 year high school reunion.

Jindabyne project - no link Jindabyne: current project
This website is for an accommodation unit at Jindabyne which is rented over the Winter and Summer seasons. Different rates apply and the recreation activities change through the seasons so the website is being designed to reflect this. The website will feature a booking calendar and a custom content management system to allow the owner an easy way to update the website information.

Online chart - no link Online charts: current project
Development tools are available which aid the creation of dynamic websites where the information presented may change on an hourly or daily basis. This application, currently under development, will present a line graph of stockmarket figures. The graph will be created 'on the fly' with current data when requested by the website visitor. The programming language used is PHP.
